Datacard SR300 printers used for the High secure access cards for the ITER project

The Provence region in the south of France is home to the ITER project. This international research and development project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear fusion as an energy source. In particular, it aims to gain experience in the design, construction and commissioning of a fusion reactor.

The ITER project

Launched in 1985 as a collaboration between the European Union, the former Soviet Union and the United States, this project has been officially supported and funded since 2007 by seven participants. After preparatory ground work on the 180-hectare site near Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, the construction of the various scientific buildings has recently begun.

Access control

Access control in the ITER complex is managed by a new Access Control and Identity Management (IM) system, based on high-quality photo ID access cards. These cards use Smart chip technology and are equipped with various security features to prevent unauthorised use and to support the security processes of the ITER project now, and in the future.

Datacard SR300

Following the issuance of an international tender, the Datacard SR300 printers were selected to issue the secure access cards, together with a highly secure laminate that has a unique and personalised ITER holographic overlay. By using the SR300 printer, cards can be printed over-the-complete surface of the card, as well as personalising the secure smart chip data in a single operation. In addition, the Datacard LM300 lamination ensures a perfect double-sided application of the security foil. This technology has provided a high quality solution for a truly revolutionary project!
