Datacard MX6000 used for issuing Luxembourg ID-documents

Governments have a duty to establish an Identity-infrastructure that provides for trusted and secure identification. Individuals, companies and government bodies should be able to rely on someone being who they say they are. Not only in the physical world, but increasingly in the digital world too.

Identity documents

Official Identity documents are the basis of this infrastructure and are now mainly issued in the form of a plastic card and/or a passport booklet with a plastic or paper holder page. Today, these documents are often also fitted with a smart chip.

Central vs. decentralised personalisation

There are basically two scenarios for issuing passports and identity cards. Either decentralised personalisation via desktop equipment at locations throughout the country or centralised personalisation, at one central secure location, using high volume production equipment. In addition, the use of desktop equipment may be the better option for processing smaller volumes.

Datacard MX6000

Although only having a relatively small population and requiring a correspondingly small number of official documents, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg took the decision to select the Datacard MX6000 - a high quality, high volume personalisation system - to produce its official Identity documents.

Since the middle of 2012, the Luxembourg government has been issuing highly secure laser engraved smart cards on the Datacard MX6000 card personalisation systems. These identity cards contain an electronic chip and provide Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption. This offers Luxembourg government bodies highly secure and trusted transactions when using the card for government services. In addition, the MX6000 is also used to issue the Luxembourg Residence Permit cards.

Growing in step with the needs

All around the world Datacard MX6000 systems have gained their reputation by its proven reliability, its modular design (which allows users to configure an MX system to meet their precise needs and future requirements) and the choice to select from extensive personalisation options. This was a key factor for the Luxembourg government, as well as the requirement for good local support.

Building on this success, Luxembourg has now replaced - in a project led by the digital security company Gemalto SA - it's traditional paper based driving licence with a highly secure laser-engraved card. Again issued on the Datacard MX6000 system!
